Start to the season under the lights of Qatar

It is getting serious this week. On Friday thousands of lights will let the Losail International Circuit shine bright for the traditional floodlight-season-opener – the Grand Prix of Qatar. For the first time ever you will meet the new qualifying format in Moto2.

For the 13th time in a row, the 5.4-kilometer Qatar desert course is the unique venue for the spectacular season opener, which takes place in the evening hours under tremendous floodlight-facilities.

The Dynavolt Intact GP team has been in Doha on the Arabian Peninsula for a few days now and successfully completed the last official pre-season test there on Sunday with Tom Lüthi as second fastest and Marcel Schrötter as fifth.

When Tom Lüthi competed in his last Moto2-race in 2017 on the Losail Circuit, he stormed onto second place. The year before he won the Qatar-Grand-Prix vastly superior, also aboard a Kalex. After an educational year in the MotoGP-class the Swiss is ready for a new charge! Marcel Schrötter gained the seventh place during the Qatar kickoff-race of 2018 and is returning one year later with some great achievements and a lot of motivation. The first of 19 races of season 2019 is about to start!

For the first time this weekend in Moto2, the new qualifying format of two 15-minute sessions will be put into practice. As in MotoGP, all three free practice sessions will now count towards Qualifying 1 or 2, with the top 14 riders of the combined standings of FP1, FP2 and FP3 advancing straight to Q2. The remaining riders will compete in Q1, from which the four fastest pilots will advance to Q2. Finally 18 riders will compete in Q2 and fight for the front six starting rows.
