Binder shines with P7 in Spielberg, Agius scores in fifteenth place

In the eleventh Grand Prix of the year, LIQUI MOLY Husqvarna Intact GP Moto2 rider Darryn Binder grabbed nine valuable world championship points with his seventh place, while rookie Senna Agius finished a solid race in fifteenth place winning one point.

For Darryn Binder, the weekend in Austria went to plan. The South African quickly familiarised himself with the 4.35 km long circuit and secured himself twelfth place on the grid in Qualifying 2, from where he got off to a good start and made his way straight into the top 10 on Sunday. Within a few laps, the 26-year-old found himself in eighth place, which he then further improved to P7. With this seventh place, Binder collects nine points, which sees him jump from 20th to 16th place in the world championship. In general, Binder has shown good development recently, which he would like to continue together with his crew when the next round starts in Aragon in a fortnight's time.

Senna Agius also went into the eleventh race of his rookie season with high ambitions. The Red Bull Ring did not make it easy for the 19-year-old youngster, especially as it is quite difficult to make up positions by overtaking on the stop-and-go circuit. Nevertheless, the Australian managed to make up three places from his eighteenth starting position. The reigning European Moto2 champion takes one point with him from Austria and hopes to regain his old strength in Aragon from the 30th of August to the 1st of September.

"I’m really happy with the whole weekend in general. I made good steps forward and was in the top ten in almost all the sessions. A small mistake in qualifying left me in 12th and I would have loved to have been further forward on the grid because during the race it was quite difficult to make passes. I did a good job. We’re heading in the right direction and after a few more top tens we can start thinking about the top five. We just have to keep chipping away."

"To take points home is always the first goal but this weekend that was not the performance or the feeling we’ve had in the previous races. We lost some of our strong points, so we need to work to get those back soon. Happy to leave here with something in my hands and a big thanks to the team, they never stopped working. We didn’t achieve what I wanted but we all worked for it…and I hope we’ll get near to our ambitions again soon."

"We are very satisfied and happy for Darryn with another good weekend for him. He made it into Q2 again and a grid position on the fourth row is obviously helpful. After a good start, he immediately caught up with the chasing pack and was able to keep up well. The many battles for position were great to watch and, in the end, Darryn was able to assert himself well. His seventh place confirms his Silverstone weekend, which makes us very happy. We hope that he can continue like this because he seems to have found the drive that is needed in Moto2.
Senna found his way into Q2 after some initial minor difficulties. Unfortunately, he lost a lot at the start. Nevertheless, he fought his way up from far back into the points. For a long time, he set very similar lap times to the chasing pack, in which was Darryn too. That was good and he showed his potential again. Nevertheless, you have to recognize his performance after he didn't feel so comfortable with the bike all weekend. It's all the more remarkable that he was still able to set times like that in the race. You can build on that, and we have to make sure that we give him what he wants. It's probably just a small thing, so we are confident that things will go better for him in Aragon. His speed is there, the lap times have clearly confirmed that."
