Phenomenal double victory for Hector Garzo at the Sachsenring

The Sachsenring Grand Prix could not have gone better for the MotoE squad of the German-based Dynavolt Intact GP MotoE team. Hector Garzo demonstrated his title ambitions with two outstanding victories, one of which was achieved in disastrous conditions. Local hero Lukas Tulovic scored further valuable championship points with a seventh and a tenth place.

It is Hector Garzo's little summer fairytale, written on German soil, the home of his Dynavolt Intact GP MotoE racing team. The Spaniard travelled to the Sachsenring in fifth place of the world championship. He will leave it as the clear world championship leader. After his first triumph on Saturday afternoon, the 26-year-old already took the lead in the standings and was able to extend this further in the second race of the day, but Garzo deserves special respect for his phenomenal performance. As the MotoE field prepared for the start of Race 2, the dark storm clouds rolled in with great strides and, as announced, the previously sunny Sachsenring turned into a sea of rain, which is why the session had to be started with a delay of over an hour and a shortened race distance. During the eight laps, the ambitious title contender gave his all. He took the race lead on the very first lap and from then on battled against Spinelli, from whom he was able to pull further and further away despite the extremely wet track and a sliding rear after the two had previously tossed the fastest race laps back and forth. Hector Garzo eventually crossed the finish line as the clear winner with a lead of 3.485s.

Team-mate Lukas Tulovic also had a good German Grand Prix and was well supported by the home crowds. Starting from ninth on the grid, the local hero battled against four rivals for fourth place in Race 1 and ultimately finished seventh. This earned him nine points, which is a high score considering the recent operation on his left hand and the very left-handed nature of the Sachsenring. The midday heat gave way to rain in the late afternoon, which completely changed the conditions once again - conditions in which the 24-year-old has not felt too comfortable on his Ducati V21L so far. Nevertheless, he held on to a safe tenth place in the race, which started as a rain race and earned him a further six world championship points.

After this magnificent home success, the MotoE squad from Memmingen in Bavaria will have an extended summer break before the penultimate round of the season at the Austrian Motorcycle Grand Prix from the 16th - 17th of August.

"After I had messed up qualifying myself, prospects for race day were modest. The first start of the first race was good. The second at the restart was less good, as I was pushed wide in the first corner. After that, I got the maximum out of it with 7th place by overtaking a lot of riders. Then, in the afternoon, the rain came before the second race, which caused a big delay. Apart from that, I've never felt comfortable in the wet this year. Today was better than last time, but it wasn't enough. The result was accordingly. The weekend didn't go at all as I had imagined my home race would. The disappointment is correspondingly great. But that's how it is in sport sometimes, I have to process it all first, come down and then come back stronger in Austria."

"After a good qualifying session, I started the races from the second row of the grid with a lot of confidence. It's been an intense few weeks with four races in a fortnight, so I'm all the more pleased that the work has now paid off. With the double victory, I can give something special back to my team, especially at their home Grand Prix. I am very happy for the team and all the supporters. There's not much more to say at this point. I'm super happy with the two results and I'm looking forward to going into the summer break and then the Austrian Grand Prix as the championship leader."

"We are over the moon and very happy for Hector. He performed in a masterclass today. The base for this was a good qualifying. In both races, in which the conditions were completely different, he had a good start from the second row. What he showed afterwards was a performance of the finest quality. At lunchtime it was dry and temperatures quite hot, which was not easy to handle, especially with the front tyre. But Hector mastered it perfectly and deserved to win. In the afternoon, the conditions in the wet were very difficult without prior practice. But, obviously, two warm-up laps were enough for him to develop a feeling and a good pace. Hector then simply took our advice when we told him to ride at his own pace. And it was quite high, so he won a second time today. We are really happy for our whole MotoE team because they all did a great job."
"We feel a bit sorry for Lukas that his home race went like this. Especially after the second practice session, he wasn't able to transfer this performance into qualifying. But he has shown that he has more potential than he is showing at the moment. We are confident that we will soon achieve top results with him too."
