Senna Agius crowned Moto2 European Champion with sensational double victory

With the triumph of the 18-year-old Australian rider, LIQUI MOLY Husqvarna Intact GP Junior Team repeated its success from last year, when Lukas Tulovic took the title. There were also points for Jakob Rosenthaler and Leo Rammerstorfer in the JuniorGP Moto3 race on Sunday.

After a disastrous end at the last stop of the series almost three months ago in Barcelona, Moto2 rider Senna Agius had another chance this weekend at the Spanish circuit MotorLand Aragón to prove his skills and decide the title in European Championship already early. During practice sessions, Agius left no doubt about his ambitions and also set strong lap times in qualifying, which secured him pole position in the end. In the second race of the day, Agius not only wanted to secure the well-deserved title win but did so with an irrepressible will to win after being victorious in race one by more than 16 seconds. Four pole positions, Agius started from the top spot on the starting grid in every race he took part, and seven wins so far embellish his and the team’s record of an incredible season.

In Moto3 class, the two Austrian riders Leo Rammerstorfer and Jakob Rosenthaler also started the second-last weekend of the season with high expectations. While Rammerstorfer, despite some technical problems in free practice sessions, was able to grab a Q2 spot directly, the path of his team mate proved to be a bit more bumpy. In the end, the pair managed to position themselves successfully in P10 and P14 in the race and further improve their points account before the season finale in Valencia in four weeks.

Rocco Sessler, recently crowned as overall winner of the Northern Talent Cup and who, as a reward, will be allowed to contest the last two race weekends in this year’s European Talent Cup, found himself on the grid for the first race in P15 on the fifth row, due to some penalties directed against some of his fellow racers.

For 14-year-old Mohamed Abadalaziz Binladin, on the other hand, the cancellation of the «Last Chance Race» due to persistent fog was a slight setback, as he was hoping from 4th place on the grid to be able to compete in the main races like his new team mate.

"I am overjoyed and also a bit proud of this success. Winning the second race after the first was the perfect way to end the weekend. And on top of that, I am happy about winning the title. In the first race everything went according to plan. I was able to find my rhythm immediately and pulled away. I was able to implement my pace from the previous days and then had everything under control. The second race, on the other hand, was anything but easy. Alberto (Surra) was very strong in some part of the track. I tried to overtake him but was a bit on the limit each time. It took a few tries before I was finally able to pass him. I want to thank the whole LIQUI MOLY Husqvarna Intact GP team for everything. They have given me a perfect package all season. The whole structure this year has enabled me to achieve these successes. So, my thanks also go to my coaches, my family and everyone else who was involved."

"My weekend was pretty good overall. For the first time I made it into Q2, which I am most pleased about. The race was also very solid, although of course much more is possible. But it is very important for me to have achieved a good result again after a couple of difficult weekends. We can certainly build on this, even though we had to contend with some technical difficulties. Overall, though, these did not throw us off track. Now I am looking forward to Valencia, where hopefully I can pick up where I left off here."

"P10 is a nice conclusion to a difficult weekend. I was close to the leading group over the entire distance and was even able to close a gap again at the end. In the past, Aragón was a track where I never really felt comfortable. This time things started much more pleasantly. On Thursday and Friday, I felt very comfortable, and the lap times were also good. So, I went into Saturday with a good feeling, which was also confirmed in the morning’s practice session. On my third lap I was a second faster than ever before here. I wanted to build on that, of course, until a competitor crashed into my bike. That practically ended the session for me. But my crew worked super-fast, so I was able to go out again in the last few minutes."

"After the crash it was unfortunately not possible to match or improve on my strong lap time from earlier. Although I had to start in Q1, I was very motivated because I knew there were maybe six riders who could fight for the top four positions. So I was in good spirits that I would make it. Unfortunately, a crash on the second lap ended my qualifying abruptly. I still got away relatively well with 21st place, although I was 1.5 seconds over that time I actually could have set. Due to some penalties, I was able to start the race from 18th place and after a good start I worked my way forward in the first laps. Overall, the race was a redemption for the weekend. That is why I am going home satisfied now."

"With the new bike at a track, which was unknown to me, the weekend did not start so easily. So, I had to figure out a lot of things first. But I was able to improve bit by bit in practice sessions, the jumps I did every time were about two seconds. My goal was to qualify for the races, and I just managed to do that. It was definitely close, because things did not go so well in the first qualifying session. But the second half of QP2 was much better. There is not much to say about the races, though, because I simply still lack the experience for this class. Hopefully things will go a bit better in Valencia, because I already know the track there a bit."

"The first two days here in Aragón were really good because I was able to improve properly in each session. But when it came to qualifying on Saturday, the first was not so bad because I was able to improve my lap time, but in the second I was on my own because I could not find a group where I could have benefitted from a slipstream. Therefore, it was hardly possible to improve my lap time further. It was a pity that the «Last Chance Race» was cancelled on Sunday morning. So, it was not a nice end of the weekend for me."
