Lukas Tulovic & Hector Garzo take front row at Mugello
It is a perfect start for both riders of the Dynavolt Intact GP MotoE team in Mugello, Italy, after successive improvements throughout the day resulted in the front row of the grid for Lukas Tulovic (P2) and Hector Garzo (P3), providing the perfect starting position for the two sprint races on Saturday.
Despite an improvement of over 2.3s from the first practice session of the day to P2, it was not enough for Lukas Tulovic to secure a direct place in Q2. However, this did not stop the man from Baden-Württemberg from getting straight to work in Q1. This turned out to be extremely clever, as a very brief rain shower moved over the Tuscan racetrack immediately after the start, but "Tulo" moved into second place with his time and thus into Q2. The tarmac dried before the ten-minute Qualifying 2 session, which meant that things were almost perfect again for the German, who returned to the track first and can now look forward to his second grid position in the two half-time races. The 23-year-old was ultimately just 0.312s behind pole setter Alessandro Zaccone and will be fighting for his best race results to date on Saturday.
Hector Garzo, who had a similarly successful Friday in Mugello, will also be involved in this battle. Conditions at the 5.25km Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello on Friday morning were relatively cool for Tuscany at the end of May, with damp patches from overnight rain, but as temperatures rose during the first day of practice and qualifying, lap times dropped, bringing the field even closer together. After the first practice session, Garzo was just 0.200s off Brazilian Eric Granado, whose pursuit the Spaniard resumed in the second qualifying session and eventually entered Qualifying 2 in fifth place, taking a strong third place on the grid behind his team-mate with spirited time attacks.
As soon as the two sprint races start at 12:15 and 16:10 (CEST), the two Dynavolt Intact GP MotoE riders will be fully focussed on the podium battles in order to be able to continue their journey with a full points account at the halfway point of the season.
