Gonzalez triumphs in Thailand, Agius secures double podium with P3
The LIQUI MOLY Dynavolt Intact GP Team was ecstatically celebrating after Manuel Gonzalez rode more than impressively from pole to victory. Team-mate Senna Agius delivered an equally strong performance with a hard-fought P3 and rounded off a brilliant opening race for the German team with a sensational double podium.
Everyone involved knew that Manuel Gonzalez would be a force to be reckoned with in the heated 22-lap Moto2 race after his strong qualifying performance, but the fact that the 22-year-old Spaniard would be able to ride to his first triumph of the season almost unchallenged in the first race, probably impressed many. Starting from pole position, he rode carefully into the first corners, accepted a brief loss of position to Celestino Vietti and then quickly snatched the lead back from the Italian. He did not allow this to be taken away again and so his lead over second-placed Aron Canet built up to an impressive 2.6s, which once again underlined the level of the rider with starting number 18. With 25 points, he will now continue his journey as the world championship leader to Argentina, where the second round is scheduled in a fortnight from 14th to 16th of March in Termas de Rio Hondo.
The Australian Intact GP Team rider Senna Agius also got off to a good start, as he quickly made his way from P4 into the Top 3, where he had a tough battle with Celestino Vietti. Once too hard, as an attack ended in a contact that meant the end of the race for the Italian. As a result, the 19-year-old Aussie received a long lap penalty, which he completed quickly and without losing a position in fourth place. Giving up his podium hopes was out of the question for last year's rookie, and so he fought his way back to third place as the fastest in the field at the time and delivered two absolutely thrilling final laps with Diogo Moreira. With third place in the Thailand Grand Prix, the course has been set for a successful season and the entire Moto2 squad can hardly wait to continue the good work in Argentina.
